Ear Stretching Size Chart: Gauges to Millimeters

Quick answer: gauge numbers run backward at smaller sizes: the lower the gauge, the larger the diameter. After 00g, millimeters and inch fractions are usually easier to compare. Treat the chart below as a conversion guide, then use the exact millimeter size on the product page as the final reference.

Ear stretching size chart

Use millimeters when you need the clearest comparison between two listings. Gauge and inch labels are familiar shorthand, but makers do not always group the larger sizes in exactly the same way.

Gauge or inch label Approx. millimeters Approx. inches
18g 1.0 mm 5/128 in
16g 1.2 mm 3/64 in
14g 1.6 mm 1/16 in
12g 2.0 mm 5/64 in
10g 2.5 mm 3/32 in
8g 3.2 mm 1/8 in
6g 4.0 mm 5/32 in
4g 5.0 mm 3/16 in
2g 6.0 mm 1/4 in
1g 7.0 mm 9/32 in
0g 8.0 mm 5/16 in
00g 9-10 mm about 3/8 in
7/16 in 11 mm 7/16 in
1/2 in 12-13 mm 1/2 in
9/16 in 14 mm 9/16 in
5/8 in 16 mm 5/8 in
3/4 in 19 mm 3/4 in
13/16 in 20 mm 13/16 in
7/8 in 22 mm 7/8 in
1 in 25 mm 1 in

Keep in mind: 00g is especially likely to mean either 9 mm or 10 mm. A 1/2-inch listing may be rounded to 12 mm or 13 mm. When labels disagree, compare the stated millimeter diameter rather than the category name.

How gauge sizing works

Gauge sizing is not a simple one-millimeter sequence. At smaller sizes, the number decreases as diameter increases: 16g is larger than 18g, and 8g is larger than 10g. Around 0g and 00g, many stores begin using millimeters or fractions because those measurements are easier to understand.

The wearable diameter is the part that sits inside the piercing. The visible front can be much wider, especially on decorative Plugs. A tunnel adds another visual variable: its open center can make the same wearable size look lighter than a solid plug.

Why in-between sizes matter

The jump between common labels is not always equal. An in-between millimeter size can make a proposed change smaller, but a chart cannot tell you whether tissue is ready. A piercing should be fully healed, mature and pliable before any stretch is considered. There is no universal schedule, and jewelry should never be forced.

Read a PUNKYOUTH listing in five checks

  1. Choose the millimeter size: use gauge or inch labels only as a cross-check.
  2. Check the flare: single-flare, double-flare and screw-on pieces fit differently.
  3. Find the wearable area: this is separate from the decorative face.
  4. Check overall dimensions and weight: especially for large ornaments and Ear Weights.
  5. Confirm quantity: body jewelry may be listed as a single piece or a pair.

Browse Plugs and Tunnels to compare both formats, or go directly to Tunnels for open-center styles. An Ear Stretching Kit should be evaluated by every included size, not by the largest number printed on the set.

Ear stretching size FAQ

Is 00g always 10 mm?

No. Some makers use 9 mm and others use 10 mm. Check the exact millimeter option on the product page.

What comes after 00g?

Many listings move to millimeters or inch fractions, often beginning around 11 mm or 7/16 inch. Available increments vary.

Can I measure my current size from a photo?

No. Perspective and decorative fronts distort scale. Measure the wearable jewelry with an appropriate tool or ask a qualified piercer.

Can ear weights be used to reach the next size?

Ear weights are decorative jewelry for suitable healed stretches, not tools for creating a new stretch.
